Composers/Librettists for Leeds Youth Opera 2021, Leeds Youth Opera

Description

Short opera commission for Leeds Youth Opera: expression of interest

Leeds Youth Opera turns 50 in 2021, and to celebrate we are looking to commission a composer and librettist to write a new short opera for the company.

Since 1971, Leeds Youth Opera have enabled young people in Leeds and West Yorkshire to perform in opera. One of the very few youth opera companies in the country, we are proud to welcome a diverse company of singers from ages 12 to 30 to take part in two fully staged productions per year. Not afraid of taking on challenging repertoire, the company’s past performances have included works by Maxwell Davies and Glass, alongside more familiar works by Mozart, Strauss and Donizetti.

This new commission will be performed in Summer 2021 in Leeds. At this stage we are looking for expressions of interest from composers and librettists (or composer/librettist partnerships) to help us shape the project.

We are open to different ideas as to how the piece may be created and performed, and the narrative or subject it may involve. What is important to us is that it is suitable for all of our members to perform.

We anticipate that the piece will be no longer than one hour in length and may be scored for full orchestra.

If you are interested in the project then please send a CV and cover letter (no more than 2 sides A4) with any initial ideas, outlining your working process and prospective timeline for delivery to David Ward (Trustee) – david@northernoperagroup.co.uk – by Friday 13 December.

Please note that fundraising is ongoing for this project and the chosen composer and librettist will be contracted subject to funds being received.
