Growing your business - Employing and working with others, Crafts Council


This day will introduce you to the various options available to you in growing a team, whether you are looking for support for a one off project; setting up a maker space or building capacity in your business.

We have a legal advisor who will talk you through the various elements you need to consider when working with and employing others.

  • Introduce you to Intellectual Property rights as a designer when introducing new members of your team
  • Outline the options to you: staff; short term contracts; apprenticeships; volunteers; interns; work placement
  • Risks and benefits you need to consider when recruiting
  • Introduction to employment and company law

 The afternoon will be a packed session of case studies introducing you to the benefits of working with others and how you could consider taking your first steps to growing your business to plus one!

13.30  Case study one - Conversation between an apprentice and employer/team member to discuss the benefits for the apprentice and the benefits of employing one

14.00  Case study two - Talk from a maker who has expanded his craft business, on the benefits and downsides of expanding, employing interns and using work exchange programmes
