The NORTHERN FILM SCHOOL is doing something new.

The Northern Film School in Leeds has a long history in the North of England.  We are the only dedicated ‘Film’ School between London and Scotland and one of a handful that qualify for membership of CILECT, an organisation that represents only the best film schools worldwide - and we’re cheaper and more exciting than most.

The Filmmakers’ MA is new because unlike most courses out there it mirrors real independent film production and embraces the changes that are happening in our industry: it focuses on development of ideas and collaboration between the creative skills and unlike all other courses it puts the creative producer at the heart of the process.

The Filmmakers’ MA is unusual because it celebrates individual creative freedom through the collective endeavour; it believes there is no one author of the film - the film itself is the auteur - not the director, producer or writer. Each ‘element’ that goes into a film is part of a whole. 

The Filmmakers’ MA allows you to explore any subject you want and make work in any way you want to make it.  We encourage risk taking and innovation and we hope for radical, independently spirited ‘stories’ and ideas.

The areas of filmmaking we’re interested in are: Narrative Film, Documentary, Experimental Film, Music Videos, Commercials, and Dance for Film.  And we want you to apply in your specialist area: Creative Producer, Screenwriter, Director, Cinematographer, Production Designer, Sound Recordist/Designer, Editor, and - uniquely in a Film School – Screen Performer

Unlike many courses in the country we give each filmed masters project up to £10,000 toward its budget.The Filmmakers’ MA has also appointed godparents to the course to encourage and inspire our filmmakers. Our first godfather is the legendary filmmaker Nicolas Roeg.
