Rituals - a Journey in Psychophysicality 13-17 Aug, Dance City, State of Grace

rituals – a new journey into psycho-physicality

state of grace brings their trademark artist development and training methodology to Dance City.

Building forward from the 2017 programme ‘wolves’, rituals will unlock the performative energy of participating artists through a frame-worked exploration of habitual and collective behaviours and the real and imagined rituals we build and play out, willingly or otherwise.

Using song, text, personal and collected stories, intense physicality and strong group support, rituals will provide a powerful training base and proving-ground for individual and collective creativity - within the programme itself, and beyond.

Building from the creation of a unique physical and dramaturgical score, each artist will develop work to connect up to the collective group imagination, forming multiple, complex acts of contact, association and expression.

Individual and collective rituals will form, facilitating as complete an expression as possible and a stripping-away of the physical, psychological and emotional blocks that prevent our authentic, essentially human, performative impulses.

Hours will be from 9am – 5pm.

Artists will need to be available across the whole week and for all sessions (6 per day). Ideally suited to dancers, physical performers, actors, singers and performer-musicians, the work is nevertheless inclusive of all artists of all levels of experience and abilities but will work from a strong and energetic physical base.

state of grace is an inclusive organisation that welcomes diversity of all kinds.

At the end of the week, the group will present an informal sharing of training and made work to an invited audience. Selected sessions will be live-streamed to UK/international partners.

With the support of Dance City and Arts Council England, participation in rituals is free of charge.

This year, we are opening out the programme to emerging artists who are still in training as well as early-career and established artists. We will seek to curate a balanced group through which difference is both celebrated and respected.

Invitation is by application only. For details, please email
