Description

Sheffield’s Eclipse Theatre has announced details of ‘Black Arts World: Slate Weekender’ – a four-day event (12 – 15 Sept) produced by Slate – an Eclipse movement and supported by Site Gallery’s City of Ideas Project.

Audiences can expect performances, exhibitions, talks and socials at venues in Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter, a short walk from the train station. Creative talent and innovation from Black artists spanning visual arts, design, music, literature and spoken word, performing arts, film, photography and live art will be presented at The Workstation, Showroom Cinema, Site Gallery, Site Square and Sidney + Matilda.

The standout line-up includes writer and broadcaster Colin Grant who leads a conversation with Jeffrey Boakye, Shabina Aslam and Jennifer Makumbi on whether it’s a good time to be black. Award-winning filmmaker Eelyn Lee’s shorts are part of a specially curated screening at Showroom Cinema, visual artist Yvetter Ja Hawkin’s silk sculptures and short films by artist Harold Offeh will be on display at Sidney + Matilda for the duration of the weekender. Rising sensation Chiedu Oraka, a leading rapper from Hull, is confirmed as performing in Sunday’s finale in Site Square.

Curator Melanie Abrahams commented “This event is about now.  It showcases over thirty Black artists who are progressive, bold and brilliant. Having social gatherings in the heart of Sheffield is an act of solidarity as well as connectivity. At a time of political uncertainty, artists care to show their imaginations and Slate, Site Gallery, Showroom Workstation and Sidney + Matilda care to join forces across their venues. The mix of masterclasses, talks, exhibitions and socials will encourage ideas, exchange and resonance that can bring cultural impact beyond the festival and the city.”

Sharna Jackson for Site Gallery says “We're privileged to be teaming up with Eclipse’s Slate movement and partner venues on this landmark event in Sheffield. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the Cultural Industries Quarter through our City of Ideas programme.
