Lake District Summer Music is delighted to announce that, as Renna Kellaway MBE retires, Stephen Threlfall has been appointed as its new Artistic Director from October 2020.

Stephen is a cellist, conductor and creative director of numerous artistic projects. He stood down from his role as Director of Music at Chetham's School of Music last September after 24 years during which the school prospered and developed under his musical guidance and commitment to the students and the wider musical community.

He will be forever associated with the many outstanding performances of the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra in particular and for his central role in the production and the launch of the acclaimed Stoller Hall in 2017 – a stunning new performance venue in the heart of Manchester and the North West region.

The 36th International festival would have been a fitting farewell to our renowned Artistic Director, Renna Kellaway, whose retirement was to be announced with the publication of the programme. In common with so many public events, the Covid 19 epidemic has led to the cancellation of the 2020 international festival.

Renna Kellaway founded LDSM and its International Festival in 1985. Under her guidance it has become firmly established as one of the cultural highlights of the Lake District. It had been intended that the 2020 Festival would celebrate her wonderful and unique contribution.

Stephen Threlfall, welcoming his appointment, said "I am extremely thrilled to be leading the LDSM to the next stage of its history and to build on its enviable reputation. In these challenging times it will be ever more important to enhance the reach of the Festival, given its significant role in the cultural and community life of the Lakes and beyond. "

Gordon Hands, Chair of the Trustees, paying tribute to Renna Kellaway, declared

"We intended the 2020 festival would celebrate the wonderful and unique contribution Renna has made, bringing world class musicians to our doorstep; instead we shall honour her by ensuring continuity of this special festival for the future."
