Education (handicapped children) Act 1970 project

On the 23rd July it will be 50 years since the Education (handicapped children) Act 1970 introduced ‘An Act to make provision, as respects England and Wales, for discontinuing the classification of handicapped children as unsuitable for education at school, and for purposes connected therewith.’ Meaning from the 23rd July 1970 all children of compulsory school age had a right to an education.

Artist (Jess) would like to commemorate the Act on the 23rd July 2020 by asking you 50 years on how inclusive/accessible do you feel the education system is today? or what would your ideal school look like?

She will gather people's audio responses to create a sound installation. Everyone is welcome to take part. If you are under 18 you will need permission from a parent or guardian.

Your audio recordings only need to be around 1 minute long. You can create recordings on iPhones with the Voice Memos app or if you have an Android phone to download a voice-recording app. You are also welcome to send a video and Jess will remove the audio.

Please send your audio to:

If you need support with recording or sending your audio or you have any questions please also email Jess at
