Artist Commission, BALTIC Centre For Contemporary Art, MAPS Festival

Chalk and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art are seeking proposals from artists to present a high quality, interactive arts experience for children under 11 and their families as part of Chalk's MAPS Festival in February 2020.

MAPS Festival will be a creative and immersive 10 days of music, art and play aimed at children under 11 and their grown ups taking place in venues across Newcastle/Gateshead between 15th - 24th February 2020.

Through an exciting programme of play-led arts experiences, the festival will be unexpected, bold and ambitious. From interactive gigs to artist-led play environments, the programme will expose audiences to new, high quality arts experiences and also develop innovative collaborative practice between artists and art forms.

As part of MAPS, Chalk, together with BALTIC, is seeking proposals for an innovative new work to present over the closing festival weekend (22nd - 24th February) at BALTIC.

Artists will present their work in a white cube space on Level 1 of the gallery. The selected artist/s will have a budget of £5,000 to include appropriate fees, production, installation and any collaborator costs. Proposals can be from any art form, but we are particularly interested in receiving proposals from performance, theatre, VR, AR and digital artists. Applications can be from individual artists or collaborative teams.

The proposals must be for projects that are:

  • Fully accessible

  • Suitable for children under 11 years old and their families

  • Interactive and playful in approach rather than a passive experience

  • Innovative and original

  • Maximum of a 45 minute long experience as access to the piece will be in bookable sessions throughout the closing festival weekend – 22nd - 24th February.

  • Installed on 21st February 09.00 – 18.00

The deadline for expressions of interest is 12pm on 12th December 2019. Please submit a pdf including a one page proposal, supporting links and images of previous work, budget breakdown and biography to
