The Other MA (TOMA) is a 12-month artist-run education model based in Southend, Essex. TOMA believes in lifelong learning and was created in response to the hierarchies surrounding accessing higher education. It was set up in 2016 to offer responsive, affordable, accessible art education to artists. TOMA now wants to offer similar opportunities to exhibiting artists with the TOMA Project Space in Royals Shopping Centre Southend.
TOMA is looking for two emerging* artists who are either based in or from Essex to have the opportunity to each have a solo show in the artist-led TOMA Project Space. Each show will take place for just over 2 months from the end of February 2020. We would encourage artists applying to think about the possibility of a public programme event as part of it, perhaps a workshop, talk or performance.
We are looking to work with artists who might have had to put their making on pause due to caring for others. We are looking to work with artists who have never had a solo show. We are looking to work with artists who might have experienced barriers in getting their work out there (money, time, geography, age, disability, gender, ethnicity + other hierarchies hidden or otherwise).
Exhibiting artists will receive a small artist fee and materials budget. TOMA also has a small artist-led team in place to support you through the process; curators and a technician.
If you would like to apply please send a 250 word artist statement and 500 word exhibition proposal. Images and diagrams are also welcomed as part of the application. Please email as a PDF to email@example.com. This is also the best email if you have any questions.
*To TOMA an emerging artist is someone who has not yet had a solo show and does not have gallery representation. TOMA’s emerging artists are often DIY, self-published and self-sufficient.
