Milton Keynes Council and Newport Pagnell Town Council are looking to appoint an artist/creative practice to develop a proposal for a way-finding scheme for the town of Newport Pagnell.
It is envisaged that the scheme will mark out route ways and emphasise historic sites and places of local interest across the town. The scheme will encourage an exploration and navigation of the town, where the community and visitors will encounter six gateway pieces of art, a series of individual artworks/way finder signs, historical notice boards including an element of artwork linked to app providing a guide to the trail. The project will reflect the rich heritage of the town and be informed through engagement with local people. We are looking for an artist with good experience of working within the public realm and whose practice is grounded in community engagement and place making.
Up to four artists will be selected for an initial stage of research and development with a total budget of £1500 each, inclusive of artist’s fees, materials, equipment hire, travel and any other associated costs. This stage will be completed by 28 June 2018. Proposals by each artist will then be on display for public consultation, following which, one of the artists will be appointed to fulfil the second and third stage of the project; the realisation and completion of the project with a possible total budget within the region of £116,500. Stage Two will require the delivery of gateway entrances and wayfinder signage by June 2019. Stage Three will follow, when funding is released, with the creation and installation of historic notice boards and linked mobile app to develop a town trail.
Artists applying must be able to work to this timeframe and be available to attend a local history tour of Newport Pagnell during the day on 11 June.
