Bedford Creative Arts is calling for artists to join our new Queen’s Park Cultural Capital project; a two-year action research and co-creation project funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and The Harpur Trust, with additional support from Arts Council England, Bedford Borough Council and bpha housing association.
Bedford Creative Arts is an Arts Council NPO commissioning new artworks with and for communities. We focus on transformative experiences that tackle issues of social engagement and social justice with over 30 years experience of artist collaboration, mentoring and commissioning.
The Queen's Park Cultural Capital project is set in the diverse community of Queen’s Park, Bedford where residents of all ages will be invited to collaborate with artists on a series of artworks exploring cultural capital in today’s society. It will culminate in a co-created festival in year two. The project will ask how development of cultural capital in a diverse community can contribute to greater connectedness, sense of place and belonging. The project will run until April 2021.
We are seeking proposals from artists with social engagement integral to their practice and with experience of working in the public realm in response to place. Due to the embedded and durational nature of the project, we are particularly interested in artists living and working locally to Bedford or within a 30-mile radius of the town.
In the first year we are appointing artists for two commissions in response to either one of two themes:
The Living Archive - exploring connectivity in a multi-cultural community
The Community Blueprint - exploring what makes a community successful
The final commissions can take any form and will have collaboration and co-creation with the community at their heart.
