Dramaturg for CIVIC - a FUSE Diverse Dance Production, Barbican Theatre, Plymouth

Description

Barbican Theatre has a strong history of dance and theatre development over the last 39 years and FUSE is the next step. FUSE is a brand new diverse dance project funded by Arts Council England. It aims to innovate a new way of making dance by bringing together diverse communities, local dancers and guest choreographers as equal partners - to have fun, share dance styles and create mind blowing and accessible new performances.

About CIVIC

The Barbican Theatre and FUSE Diverse Dance team are putting together their second FUSE production in February 2020 and are looking for a dramaturg to assist the development of this ambitious community performance project. Entitled CIVIC, the show will be devised using the physical architecture of Plymouth’s former iconic Civic Centre as a backdrop for its investigation into civic engagement.

About the Dramaturg role

The dramaturg will work directly with, and be accountable to, the FUSE lead choreographer, Suzie West to develop the stories told in Civic. This will involve

  • Working collaboratively with the FUSE team and participants, encouraging co-creation and communication to direct the dramaturgy of the production
  • Taking responsibility for the overarching production content and audience experience.
  • Researching and curating stories from the people living and working in the city, initiating an oral histories archive and interweaving their stories into the production. This will involve working across a range of ages, cultures and geographical locations in the city.
  • Initiating and supporting a group of creative writers to develop the script with you.
  • Directing and supporting a group of THRIVE, Company b and FORCE performers who are currently training or developing their practice with the Barbican Theatre.
  • Participating in the FUSE rehearsals and research days (you will be expected to commit to all dates in the schedule).
  • Advocating and actively supporting the FUSE project through your own network.
  • Being part of process/product evaluation
