Museum Archivist, Natural History Museum


The Museum Archive acts as a Place of Deposit under the Public Records and Act and is accredited under the Archives Services Accreditation Scheme. 

We are at a pivotal moment in our history as we will soon launch a new strategy setting out our role as the natural world faces increasing threats.  Building on our world-leading collection, global reputation for science and as one of the world’s leading visitor attractions, the NHM has ambitious plans leading up to the 150 anniversary of the opening of the Waterhouse Building in 2031, making this a truly exciting time to be part of the NHM team.

About the role

This is an opportunity to manage develop the Natural History Museum Archive, including providing an archives service for Museum staff and external visitors and promoting access, and use of archives resources for research, publishing and outreach. A key objective will be to work with the Museum Information Management Team and Technology Solutions to develop and implement a digital archive solution for the Museum’s digital records.            

About you

You will have strong team working skills and work closely with colleagues within Library and Archives in the delivery and development of services for internal and external users and also with the Museum Information Management Team and Technology Solutions Teams.

We are looking for a qualified archivist with excellent communication skills, staff management and proven experience of archives standards, collections management and preservation in both physical and digital formats. 

The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of records management, copyright and data protection in relation to the maintenance of and access to institutional records.  You will also have archive cataloguing skills to recognised professional standards and a detailed knowledge and experience of the CALM archives software or similar system. You will have an understanding of digital archives to ensure best practice is achieved in a wide variety of media as well as born-digital and digitised content.
