Producer, Gestalt Arts

Gestalt Arts is currently looking for a producer for Indus: A theatrical experience for sighted and non-sighted audiences using song, sound and the collective imagination. Based on the experiences of Bethan Langford. Composed by Laura Bowler writer/director Ruth Mariner.

Indus is a intimate new work & unique approach to integrated access using electronic music, live drawing, audio description and the operatic voice. It explores the relationship between disability and environment through the unlikely story of whale evolution.

In a cocoon-like sound word of soft electronic textures & song, live drawing reacts with storytelling (audio description), leaving space for the imagination and creating a powerful and equal experience for visually impaired and sighted audiences.

Influenced by the theatre making of Tim Crouch (Adler and Gib), Simon McBurney (The Encounter) and Meredith Monk. A team of opera/theatre makers join visually impaired singer Bethan Langford to reexamine the relationship between stage and sound, text, drawing and representation.

The project has so far been supported by Fuel, Unlimited, The International Opera Awards Foundation and Snape Maltings. The next stage of the project is a residency at Snape Maltings in August 2020 (dates TBC, producer may not have to be there for the whole period). We are planning to tour the work in 2021.

The producer's primary goal would be to maintain relationships with venues and book the tour for 2021, then to produce the tour. We are therefore looking for someone with tour booking experience. Ideally, the right candidate would also have a range existing relatinoships with theatres. Experience working within disability arts is preferred, but it is not essential, since we may also outsource this side of the work to a disability arts consultant.
