An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Scientific Research for a highly motivated Research Assistant to join a collaborative research project. The project investigates early colonial dynamics in indigenous communities on Isla De Mona, to the west of Puerto Rico. You will explore diet and cuisine in the pre- and post-European contact period through studying patterns in pottery use in both indigenous and European ceramic container types and lead on the extraction, analysis and interpretation of lipid residues from ceramic samples.

The post holder will have a masters qualification in chemistry, or similar, and demonstrable knowledge of archaeology, analytical organic chemistry or organic geochemistry as well as lipid analysis and mass spectrometry interpretation. The candidate will have experience of working in a multiple user analytical science facility and be familiar with common laboratory data software packages.

The individual will be highly motivated, willing to take initiative and able to work as a member of a busy departmental research team. They will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of safe working practice in the laboratory and capable of keeping highly organised records.
