Development Trustee, Brixton Chamber Orchestra

Description

The Brixton Chamber Orchestra provides fantastic live orchestral experiences for wide-ranging audiences in Brixton and beyond. One aim is to popularise the live performance of classical music and present it to new and varied audiences, often in unexpected venues. We also enjoy working on innovative collaborations with artists from a variety of musical traditions, including Grime, Gospel, Rock, Folk, Jazz & R’n’B. We are Brixton’s own orchestra: a product of local talent and the unique blend of creative energy and cultural diversity which characterises the area.

We strive to maintain the highest quality of music performance, with our principals trained at the UK’s top conservatoires. This works in combination with our auditioned volunteer musician base who contribute great spirit and ethos to the orchestra. Engagement with our local community is central to our philosophy, as shown through our many outreach and public events. This has gained us airtime on national television and coverage in national press. With a diverse mixture of musicians, we are at the forefront of Brixton’ music-making.

We are looking for a trustee with knowledge and experience in developing arts organisations. We need advice and guidance in the sourcing of operational and project funding and the development of a sustainable organisational structure.

BCO was founded in July 2018 and became a charity the following December. In our first year, we carried out twelve projects without any paid staff. Musicians were paid small fees, made possible by performance fees and some donations from Brixtonians. In 2019 we began paying a Music Director, Projects Manager and Orchestral Manager. In December 2019 we received our first grant - from Arts Council England. In 2020 we want to increase our staff to five and begin paying Musicians’ Union rates to performers.

Trustees attend quarterly board meetings and receive invitations to all performances. We are looking for someone who has contacts in the arts sector and would be willing to facilitate networking opportunities.

If you would like to be considered, please tell us why you think you're suitable for this role.
