Writing Science - Spring Term 2021
Wednesday 13th January 2021 – Wednesday, 31st March 2021
In this course, we'll be spending 12 weeks exploring how poetry has engaged with scientific ideas from the ancient world to the contemporary. And we'll be using science to inspire new poems each week. This is a 12 week correspondence course, and you can take part from anywhere in the world. Each week you receive a tutorial via email (illustrated with videos and audio recordings). There are writing prompts and exercises to inspire work, an online chat group for discussion with other participants, and detailed written feedback from the Live canon team.
In the first nine weeks of the course we’ll be looking at a different area of science each week: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, sci-fi (!), medicine, astronomy, geography, botany. In the final three weeks we’ll be looking at some more broad themes of language, imagery, intuition and imagination.
The cost is 180 pounds (120 pounds for students and the unwaged). That includes 12 tutorials, and detailed written feedback each week on your work.
Live Canon courses are taught by our director, Dr Helen Eastman, and Senior Editor, Rebecca Hare.
Feedback from participants on other Live Canon correspondence courses:
'The tutorials are absolutely packed with information, inspiration and ideas. Way more than I was expecting'.
'I've been on quite a lot of poetry courses. This is the first that has really changed me as a writer.'
'I found myself relating pretty much everything I was reading, writing or thinking to the course. It was three months of pure engagement for me'.
'This sort of correspondence course is a god send if, like me, you are on the other side of the world from the poetry community you used to be a part of...'
