Event Summary
Filmmaker Joanna Callaghan shares a powerful, humorous and deeply personal story of recovery after breast cancer.
Event Description
Audiences around the country will have the opportunity to experience Goodbye Breasts! (2025), the moving and inventive new documentary from writer and director Joanna Callaghan. Travelling from Brighton, to London, Cambridge, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, York and Bath and featuring post screening discussions with experts to explore how medicine, community & creativity come together in recovery. The documentary offers a strikingly original exploration of recovery after breast cancer treatment through a blend of humour, creativity and honesty. A two-time hereditary cancer patient, Callaghan transforms her own post-surgery experience into an imaginative & life-affirming story about resilience, identity and healing. Following a double mastectomy, the documentary traces Callaghan's unconventional recovery journey-from building a giant inflatable breast & choreographing post-surgery dance routines to hosting a celebratory "Goodbye Breasts!" farewell party. Combining candid self-shot footage, animation and archival material, the film creates a narrative that is both deeply personal and widely relatable. The film has received recognition at major international festivals, including the Audience Award at Cinecity Brighton Film Festival.
