Alfred Cohen's large-scale works can be mesmerising: his complex, shimmering paintings of the Thames; or the dynamic, expressive theatrical figures. But his smaller pictures have a visual intensity and emotional charge which is just as great. To mark the 25th anniversary of Cohen's death, and of setting up the Alfred Cohen Art Foundation, the present exhibition is a mini-retrospective, bringing together over twenty smaller paintings and drawings not seen before at the School House. They are superb works of beauty, feeling, and humour. As Cohen wrote in a catalogue for a mixed exhibition: 'Abundant energy and imagination can be found within the dimensions of a small canvas'. 'European art abounds with marvellous examples of great but small pictures', he said, citing artists from Vermeer and Rembrandt to Klee, Picasso, Vuillard and Bonnard. The works here show Cohen in conversation with the Expressionists and Post-Impressionists; but as always, the result is something unmistakably individual and memorable. The exhibition includes landscapes, seascapes, interiors and figures, and represents all five decades of Cohen's career. They complement the twenty other smaller pictures regularly on show in the Museum. Each is, in Cohen's words, 'A picture for the eye to encompass in close embrace.'
