It might feel counter-intuitive to be thinking about Christmas in the middle of July... But as the heatwaves bear down on us, many organisations will already be deep into production planning for the Winter Season, and it feels like a good time to take an hour to pause and take stock of how sustainability fits into those plans. It often feels like Pantomimes and Christmas Shows are impossible to make more sustainable. They are often a theatre's biggest show of the year, with audience expectations of large-scale, high production values, glitter, merchandise, and a never-ending stream of costume changes. However! Pantomimes and Christmas Shows also hold a lot of potential for a theatre and freelance creatives to think sustainably. Often Pantomimes have high-levels of costume and set re-use, and often circulate the same small number of titles. Christmas time is a time for goodwill: to share good news stories on sustainability with your audience, and get performing companies involved in thinking about a greener, more positive future.
