Paul Evans draws much of her imagery from memories, myths, legends, folk traditions and the curious, creating works in which the familiar can quickly become uncanny. Her early life growing up in the West Country contributed to an enduring fascination with nostalgia, superstition and the traditions through which stories are passed from one generation to another. Her sources, however, extend far beyond Britain, drawing upon tales, beliefs and imagery from other cultures and places.

There is a deliberate tension within Evans's work between darkness and light, humour and unease. Not every memory is comfortable and not every traditional tale has a happy ending. Animals appear frequently, often taking on distinctly human characteristics, while figures and creatures inhabit a world in which the boundaries between the everyday, the magical and the unsettling remain fluid.
Much of Evans's current practice centres on printmaking, including an immediate and physical approach to monotype in which she uses the studio floor as part of the working process. Prints and drawings are frequently combined with other materials, including textiles, allowing individual images to develop beyond conventional printmaking and into more tactile, hybrid forms.

Touching Magic brings these strands together in an exhibition that shifts in scale between the intimate and the expansive: small works invite close scrutiny while larger images give Evans's curious cast of forms, animals and imagined presences a more commanding physical presence.

Pauline Evans studied Fine Art at Portsmouth Polytechnic before completing a Master's degree in Printmaking at Chelsea College of Art. She subsequently undertook postgraduate teacher training in Art at Birmingham Polytechnic and completed foundation studies in Art Psychotherapy.

She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the South-East, with her work shown at venues including the Mall Galleries, London, and Palazzo Strozzi, Florence.
