Event Summary
Event Description
In her new book, Perilous Enchantment, the acclaimed historian of myth and folklore, Sarah Clegg, tracks the fascinating history of fairies, from the pre-Christian creatures of classical myth via medieval royal courts, witch trials, Victorian hoaxes, fairy balls, all the way to the modern phenomena of romantasy. Tracing their ubiquitous presence in storytelling and landscape across the globe, the book considers the way folklore evolves in response to culture, religion and politics and shines fresh light on the real and imagined world of fairies in all their terrifying darkness and seductive splendour.
In conversation with fellow historian and Betwixt the Sheets podcast host, Kate Lister, they'll explore the enduring influence and our endless fascination with these mysterious, magical, mythical creatures.
Dr Sarah Clegg is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller The Dead of Winter. Her first book, Woman's Lore, was shortlisted for the HWA Non-Fiction Crown. She has a PhD in ancient history from the University of Cambridge, is a former bookseller and now works in publishing. She was on The London Library Emerging Writers Programme from 2020-2021.
Dr Kate Lister is a writer, historian, and television presenter. She is the author of FLICK: The Story of Female Pleasure, and the host of award-winning podcast, Betwixt the Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal and Society.
Our events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors.
