Event Summary
Event Description
Curated by Dr Jane Boyer, The Fold takes its starting point from the philosophical thinking of Gilles Deleuze and, in particular, The Fold: Leibniz and the Baroque. Rather than approaching the fold simply as a visual form, the exhibition considers it as a condition through which ideas, bodies, materials, and experiences continually act upon and transform one another.
The exhibition arrives at a moment characterised by profound and often destabilising change. Developments in machine learning, shifting political alliances, environmental degradation, and the continuing possibility of global health crises form part of the contemporary landscape against which The Fold asks what it means to experience, absorb and respond to a world in flux.
Deleuze's fold proposes an alternative to simple oppositions between inside and outside, thought and matter, self and world. Instead, each continuously inflects the other. Subjectivity becomes layered and in process, while the world itself can be understood as something that bends, gathers, disperses, and changes.
