Lightning Guide to Story Structure with John Yorke
Why do some stories grip us while others fall flat? How can understanding structure help you make stronger creative decisions?
Join John Yorke, the award-winning television drama executive and bestselling author of Into the Woods: How Stories Work and Why We Tell Them, for a live online masterclass exploring the narrative foundations of drama across theatre, film and television.
John will look at why story structure exists, where it comes from and how to use it as a creative tool rather than a rigid formula. The session explores:
The building blocks of dramatic storytelling.
Archetypal story shapes and the power behind them.
How to identify and solve structural problems in your own work.
Applying narrative principles in writing, development and rehearsals.
John is a former Controller of BBC Drama Production, Head of Channel 4 Drama and Managing Director of Company Pictures, whose productions include Shameless and Wolf Hall. He founded the BBC Writers' Academy and is the author of Into the Woods and Trip to the Moon (2026).
