Job Description

The Riot Recovery Project is recruiting a freelance Community Artist to work across two connected neighbourhood projects: Taking Back the Narrative (Spring Bank) and Stepney Stories (Stepney/Beverley Road). This one-year programme (Jan 2026-Jan 2027) responds to the 2024 Hull riots and centres young people (16-25) from global majority and marginalised backgrounds to co-create public artworks that challenge stereotypes, build solidarity and reclaim space. Fee: approx. £6,000 (flexible). Delivery: April-Dec 2026. Commitment: ~20-30 days total (avg 2-3 days/month, with peaks). Commission may focus on one neighbourhood strand or both. What you'll do: Lead co-created public artwork processes (murals/mixed media/installation) Design and deliver accessible creative workshops Embed local stories and community relevance into public outcomes Collaborate with a Youth Worker and Project Facilitator Support & standards: Safeguarding support and reflective supervision Safe delivery approach (two trained adults present unless mitigations agreed) Enhanced DBS required (or willingness to complete before delivery begins) Baseline training (completed already or willingness to complete): safeguarding, risk, emergency first aid, leading activities with young people, confidentiality, EDI We welcome applications from global majority, working-class, queer, disabled and neurodivergent practitioners. Job Requirements

Experience of co-created mural/public art (or transferable participatory public art practice) Commitment to values-led, youth-centred practice and sharing decision-making power Trauma-informed approach; confidence working with marginalised young people Willingness to complete/hold: Enhanced DBS, safeguarding, risk awareness, emergency first aid, EDI Ability to plan and deliver workshops safely (two trained adults present unless mitigations agreed) Willingness to take part in reflective practice and project learning (PCS Model / Johari's Window / Gibbs' Cycle) Ability to manage your own freelance invoicing and tax

Job Responsibilities

Lead co-created public artwork processes with young people (murals, mixed media, installation) Design and deliver accessible creative workshops (1-2 sessions/month typical) Embed local stories and community relevance into outcomes, with care and consent Collaborate with the Youth Worker and Project Facilitator; attend planning/check-ins Contribute to documentation/evaluation and reflective sessions Support safe delivery: risk planning, permissions, safeguarding reporting routes and respectful boundaries Attend key public moments/events (some evenings/weekends)
