Hampstead Theatre seeks a strategic and relationship‑driven Development Director to lead fundraising, grow income across all philanthropic streams, and support our ambitious artistic work. Join a collaborative team shaping the theatre’s future.
Job Description
Hampstead Theatre is one of London's leading producing theatres, championing original, world class new writing across two stages. We are entering an exciting new chapter following the forthcoming retirement of our Development Director, Cathy Baker, who is stepping down after nearly eleven remarkable years in the role. Cathy has played a defining part in strengthening our fundraising programmes, deepening donor relationships and supporting the theatre through a dynamic period in its history. She leaves a strong platform for continued growth. With the theatre now operating without Arts Council England revenue funding, philanthropy plays a central role in sustaining our artistic ambition and long term resilience. The #HampsteadAhead campaign has already raised over £1.1m, supported by an engaged community of Patrons, Friends, major donors, trusts, foundations and corporate partners. We are seeking a strategic, ambitious and relationship driven Development Director to lead our fundraising strategy and grow income across all philanthropic streams. You will join a collaborative senior team in an organisation where fundraising is deeply embedded into planning, communications and audience engagement. This senior role combines strategic leadership, high level relationship management, team leadership and hands on fundraising. You will oversee major giving, patrons, Friends, production syndicates, trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships and campaign activity; lead key stewardship and cultivation events; manage budgets, KPIs and reporting; and line manage two Development Managers. You will inherit a committed supporter base, strong organisational momentum and a culture that recognises philanthropy as essential to delivering ambitious artistic and community work.
Job Requirements
We are looking for a proven fundraiser with a strong track record of securing significant philanthropic income across major gifts, trusts, individual giving and corporate support, ideally within a producing theatre or arts organisation. You will have experience developing successful fundraising strategies and delivering high quality donor stewardship. Strong communication and relationship building skills are essential, as is confidence working with senior stakeholders, supporters and trustees. You will bring excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure, and a collaborative approach to leadership. Experience managing events and cultivation activities is important, and you should demonstrate a commitment to Hampstead Theatre's artistic mission, values and inclusive culture.
Job Responsibilities
Lead multi year fundraising strategy and drive income across all philanthropic streams. Build and steward relationships with major donors, prospects and supporters. Oversee Patrons and Friends schemes, ensuring high value engagement. Grow production syndicates and deliver bespoke donor access. Manage trusts and foundations, including applications and reporting. Develop and steward corporate partnerships and sponsorships. Lead cultivation events, gala performances and donor receptions. Line manage two Development Managers and oversee budgets, KPIs and reporting. Support a culture of philanthropy across the organisation.
