Job Summary

Quick-fire scratch nights for adventurous new writing in theatre and performance! The Scrap is an open-access night for writers, actors and directors to try out new ideas, meet one another, and showcase their work in front of an audience. Live music, good drinks, and cool new theatre.

Job Description

If you have a text you've been working on that you'd like to jam with actors and a director, you can send us an excerpt: it should be around 10 - 20 pages (maybe fewer if it's a dense monologue), and it can't require more than four actors. We'll let you know if we're able to programme your piece in the next quarterly block, and check if you're still interested. If you are, we'll grab a director who we feel would be a good fit for your script, and cast the roles from our pools of submissions. It's worth noting that, due to The Scrap being an open-call initiative, casting is loose and indicative only. We make every effort to be sensitive and accurate in our casting choices, but we have no guarantee of who'll apply. If a particular specificity in casting is demanded by your script, we'll endeavour to work with you to find actors who are right for the parts - but it's trickier. If your script is being jammed, we ask that you still attend the workshopping from 1pm - 5pm on the day. The Scrap works best when it's a creative conversation, collaborative and flexible in nature. It's always best if you're present to provide insight and orientation to the other artists. The Scrap is a one-day commitment.

Job Requirements

We ask that scripts submitted NOT have received a professional production, and we'll be prioritising submissions from playwrights who will be able to attend the Jamming afternoon (1pm onward) as well as the evening's performance. The Scrap is always the second Thursday of the month. To make the afternoon run smoothly, we're only able to jam texts with a maximum of FOUR actors and no less than 13 and no more than 20 pages. If your play has more than four characters, make sure that it's possible to double-cast roles easily, or select an excerpt that only involves four characters.

Job Responsibilities

'Jamming' a text means we take a short excerpt of a new script (20 pages max, partner it up with actors and a director, and workshop it rapid-fire on the afternoon of the event - before doing a rehearsed reading that night. It's quick, fun, creative and collaborative, and it's a fantastic opportunity to keep your creative muscles in tune while meeting fellow practitioners in an active setting. The Jam is perfect for Playwrights with a new script they've been working, who are keen to hear it out loud and get some responses from creatives and audiences, but who haven't yet assembled a group to develop it. Here's how it all goes down: A week before the event: Everyone gets their script excerpt and allotted role. You can prepare as much or as little as you're able to. 1pm on the day: Everyone arrives at The Others in Stoke Newington, meets their team, and workshops the heck out of that text in whatever creative way they see fit! 630pm:Doors Open Participants must be available from 1pm
