Working in our Acquisitions South Team, you will be using the Library's acquisition and cataloguing system to check, order, record and pay for material selected for the Asian and African Collections, which house some of the world’s finest resources for the study of Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Job Description

The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and gives access to the world's most comprehensive research collection. Working in our Acquisitions South Team, you will be using the Library's acquisition and cataloguing system to check, order, record and pay for material selected for the Asian and African Collections, which house some of the world's finest resources for the study of Asia, the Middle East and Africa. You will have excellent knowledge of written Chinese alongside a general knowledge of the geographical areas covered by these Collections. An effective administrator with an eye for detail, you will be computer literate with effective communication and interpersonal skills. A background in library acquisitions work or procurement would be an advantage. Please be aware that this role involves a significant amount of manual handling, such as lifting and opening parcels and transporting items on book trolleys. Please note that a 10-minute test to Romanise Chinese script into Latin script (Hanyu Pinyin) is required at the interview stage for this position.

Job Requirements

Knowledge of Chinese languages and an ability to recognise a number of oriental language scripts. Attention to detail. Familiarity with the different types of publication (monographs, serials, E-media) and understanding of the various workflows. Self-motivated with ability to work to agreed standards, workflows and deadlines/targets. Flexible, pro-active approach to work. Good customer focus. Good oral and written communication skills. Initiative in problem solving and in prioritising duties. Overall understanding of library management systems, particularly processing modules. Familiarity with MS Office suite, web-based systems, and other relevant software. Good organisational skills. Ability to work as part of a team.

Job Responsibilities

To support selection by checking whether newly selected titles are already on the Library's catalogue system; to create new order records and place orders as required. To derive (import), create or amend basic catalogue records as required. To process all selected purchased/exchanged/donated titles by entering them on the Library's catalogue system and routing them for stamping, cataloguing, shelf marking/storage. To record the receipt of serials and newspapers; to label and scan all issues and route them for stamping and preparation for storage. To complete invoices on the Library's catalogue system for items received (books and standing order items) and for subscription titles (serials and newspapers). To keep statistics for all material processed. To assist with language/collection specific queries as required. To safeguard collection items during group visits, filming etc. by ordering, transporting and invigilating whilst they are in use.
