Job Summary
Job Description
Volunteer Opportunity: Creative Writing Group Facilitator
Location: Camden Town Library (with opportunities at other sites)
Commitment: Weekly sessions, 6-8 week courses (3-6 hours a week)
Start date: From April 2026 (flexible)
We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate volunteer to facilitate creative writing groups in a library setting, supporting adults with mild to moderate mental health challenges.
These groups are not about becoming a published author. Instead, they offer relaxed, supportive spaces where people can explore creativity, connect with others, and improve their wellbeing. For many participants, the group provides a valuable opportunity to reduce isolation and build confidence through shared creative activity.
Job Requirements
About the role
The volunteer will primarily work at Camden Town Library, with the possibility of also running sessions at Pancras Square Library and across other sites.
As a Creative Writing Group Facilitator, you will:
- Have experience or an interest in creative writing, with strong knowledge of the English language and a broad, inclusive understanding of literature, poetry, and playwriting.
- Plan and lead inclusive, engaging and trauma informed creative writing sessions
- Create a safe, welcoming, and non-judgemental group environment
- Encourage participation while respecting different comfort and ability levels
- Bring your own creative interests and ideas to the sessions, shaping themes and content that are appropriate for the group
Groups will be no more than 10 participants. Themes can run across the course of the term, and sessions may include breaks where appropriate. This flexibility may particularly suit students or those needing to plan around half term or reading weeks.
Job Responsibilities
Who this role is for
This opportunity would suit someone who:
- Enjoys creative writing and facilitating group activities
- Is warm, reliable, and confident creating inclusive spaces
- Is interested in arts for wellbeing, creative health, or community engagement
- May be a student or early-career practitioner looking to gain experience in the arts and health field
This role can contribute towards placement hours for those seeking experience in community engagement and working with people in contact with mental health services.
A DBS check is a bonus but not essential, as a member of the Camden Mind team will always be present to ensure safeguarding and support the group.
Research element
This project forms part of a UAL PhD study in creative community groups, focused on developing a toolkit for setting up, implementing, and evaluating creative community groups. Volunteers will be facilitating groups included in this study and will have the opportunity to use and help evaluate the toolkit
