Job Summary

Brockley Max Festival invites artists and workshop leaders from sanctuary-seeking backgrounds to lead a vibrant "arts occupation" of Hilly Fields, SE4 on 6th June to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of Hilly Fields park and the social reformer Octavia Hill.

Job Description

130 years ago, social reformer Octavia Hill fought to save Hilly Fields from development, famously describing urban green spaces as the "open-air sitting rooms of the poor." She believed that "breathing space" was a fundamental human right. Hilly Fields is in Lewisham-the first Borough of Sanctuary-and who continues this legacy by providing a different kind of breathing space for those fleeing conflict and persecution.

We are looking for creative partners from sanctuary-seeking backgrounds to help bring this journey to life during the Brockley Max festival's Max In The Park on Hilly Fields SE4, on the 6th June from midday to 6pm. Fee is £20 per hour for 6 hours for artists and/or workshop leaders.

We are looking for:

  • Art Installation Proposals: Artists to create interactive works-such as textile tree-wrapping, "vista frames" looking out over the city, or outdoor sculptures-that symbolise the strength of diverse cultures joined together.
  • Workshop Leaders: Artists to run children's craft sessions where the results contribute directly to the installations (e.g., botanical sun-printing "Leaf Tags" or collaborative weaving). We particularly welcome applicants who will deliver an installations & a children's workshops.
  • This project is refugee-led and designed to celebrate the lived experience of displacement and the power of welcome. We aim to turn the park into a "Pilgrimage of Welcome" where every visitor finds a place to belong.
  • A full project brief is available on the website link below.

  • Weather Resistance: Materials must withstand wind or light rain or the disintegration be part of the installation.
