Job Summary

Founded in 1906 by Elsie Fogerty, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Royal Central) has been at the forefront of theatre and performance education for more than a century.

Job Description

A pioneer in establishing theatre as an academic discipline, Royal Central is now an internationally recognised conservatoire and a federal member of the University of London, known for producing artists, practitioners and researchers who shape the creative industries and wider society.

Royal Central is a world-leading institution, with 75% of its research classified as world-leading in REF 2021, and an alumni community that includes Dame Judi Dench, Zo Wanamaker and Riz Ahmed. Alongside artistic excellence, Royal Central is deeply committed to equity, inclusion and social impact, and to ensuring the arts remain accessible, relevant and transformative.

As Royal Central enters an important phase of strategic delivery and organisational development, we are seeking an exceptional Chair of the Governing Body to lead the Board through its next chapter. The incoming Chair will succeed the current Chair who is stepping down in July 2026 and will work closely with the Principal and CEO, Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE, to steward Royal Central's mission, values and long-term sustainability.

This is a senior governance role requiring strategic leadership and sound judgement. For an approximate 2 days a month, the Chair will provide oversight across all areas of Royal Central's work, with particular focus on strategy, financial resilience, organisational culture and strong, inclusive governance. They will also act as a visible ambassador for Royal Central, building relationships and advocating for the institution within the creative industries and beyond.

We are interested in candidates with significant leadership experience, strong commercial and financial awareness, and a genuine commitment to arts education and social purpose. Experience of governance, higher education or complex organisations is desirable, but we are equally keen to hear from those who can bring fresh perspectives and credibility to this role.
