Job Description

The Riot Recovery Project is recruiting a freelance Youth Worker to support young people across two connected neighbourhood projects: Taking Back the Narrative (Spring Bank) and Stepney Stories (Stepney/Beverley Road). The programme (Jan 2026-Jan 2027) responds to the 2024 Hull riots and supports young people (16-25) from global majority and marginalised backgrounds to co-create public work that challenges stereotypes, builds solidarity and reclaims space.

Fee: ~£5,000 (flexible). Delivery: Apr-Dec 2026. Commitment: ~18-25 days (often half-days + some evenings). Commission may focus on one neighbourhood strand or both.

What you'll do:
Support participants' wellbeing and access needs
Create safe, trauma-informed spaces in sessions and public moments
Support group dynamics, boundaries and participation
Help young people build confidence and express themselves
Work closely with the Community Artist and Project Facilitator
Follow safeguarding processes and join reflective check-ins

Support & standards:
Safeguarding support and reflective supervision/check-ins
Safe delivery approach (two trained adults present unless mitigations agreed)
Enhanced DBS required (or willingness to complete before delivery begins)
Baseline training (completed already or willingness to complete): safeguarding, risk, emergency first aid, confidentiality, EDI
Expected to work in line with NYA Youth Work Practice Standards (or willing to complete a short induction)

Job Requirements

Experience supporting young people in community/youth settings (youth work, wellbeing, education or similar)
Trauma-informed approach and strong safeguarding awareness
Confident holding group dynamics, boundaries and safe spaces
Able to support access needs and different communication styles
Reliable communicator; comfortable debriefing and raising concerns
Enhanced DBS required (or willingness to complete before delivery begins)
Willing to complete baseline training/induction as needed

Job Responsibilities

Support participant wellbeing and access needs throughout delivery
Maintain safe, inclusive, youth-centred spaces in sessions/events
Support group dynamics and participation (low-pressure, consent-based)
Follow safeguarding procedures and contribute to risk management
Work alongside the Community Artist and Project Facilitator
Attend key sessions/public moments (some evenings/weekends)
Join reflective supervision/check-ins and contribute to learning
