Job Description
Here at Rebekah's Restoration with over 40 years collective experience, we specialise in an extensive variety of art restoration and conservation. We work with paintings, paper, frames, ceramics, sculpture and textiles. From ancient artefacts and antiques to the contemporary and the now. We aim to provide the highest quality art restoration and conservation, using both traditional methods as well as new materials and techniques. We are looking for a paintings restorer to join our team in delivering the best restoration in the city. We need someone who can make sure that paintings coming into the studio are restored up to standard in a fast paced environment.
This role is a part-time freelance role, hours are flexible but we are looking for someone who can commit to at least 2 days (8hours/day) per week.
Job Requirements
- Must have painting restoration experience & qualifications
- Ability to work on multiple paintings at a time
- Can work on a tight schedule & is comfortable in a fast paced environment
- Ability to work independently
- Adaptable and able to pick up new skills and techniques
- Can travel to Deptford
Job Responsibilities
You should have experience in (not necessarily all) of the following:
Painting:
- Filling losses: Filling in areas where paint has flaked off or gone missing.
- Retouching: Matching colours to paint over damaged areas, ensuring these repairs are reversible.
Cleaning:
- Surface cleaning: Removing dirt, soot, smoke, and grime etc.
- Varnish removal: Removing aged, yellowed, or discoloured varnish and applying a new varnish.
- Removing overpaint: Removing paint from previous, often poor-quality, restorations.
Structure:
- Surface stabilisation: Fixing flaking, cracking, or peeling paint
- Canvas repair: Mending tears, holes, and punctures in the canvas.
- Relining/Lining: Attaching a weakened canvas to a new support canvas or linen to strengthen it.
- Strip lining: Supporting the edges of a painting.
- Structural support: Flattening or straightening panels and repairing wooden structures.
- Re-stretching: Placing the canvas back onto its original or a new stretcher/strainer
