We have an exciting opportunity for a Pottery Craft Teacher to join the team at our new Ashdown Garden School, in Forest Row.
The school is aiming to open in 2026 and is based near the Emerson College site near the beautiful Ashdown Forest and the village of Forest Row.
In this role you will be ensuring the pupils of Ashdown Garden School engage in learning and achieve by providing practical, experiential and therapeutic education through careful planning of the structure, methodology and delivery of the learning experience.
Job Requirements
To undertake this position successfully you will have:
Practical experience in pottery, including hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing, and kiln operation.
Experience working with children with SEND, Autism, and complex behavioural or mental
health needs.
Excellent communication, organisational, and ICT skills (including planning, assessment, and reporting).
Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire, demonstrating resilience, empathy, and creativity in challenging situations.
A teaching qualification (QTS) is desirable, or willingness to work towards one.
Job Responsibilities
The key duties of this role will include:
Plan and deliver pottery sessions using traditional hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques.
Fire and glaze pottery safely, maintaining kiln and workshop equipment.
Teach students to create practical and meaningful items using traditional methods, linking craft to the wider curriculum and functional skills.
Collaborate on the development and installation of craft workshops and outdoor learning spaces.
Adopt a therapeutic and supportive approach to teaching, fostering enthusiasm, enjoyment,
and self-esteem in students.
Deliver accredited qualifications in line with student pathways and external requirements.
Assess student progress, adapt teaching methods to individual needs, and minimise barriers to learning.
