Job Summary
Job Description
Internet Archive is a non-profit organisation working with 80+ world-class universities, libraries, museums and archives to create the world's largest digital open library.
You will be operating a "Scribe" digitisation machine that photographs books from various collections and puts them online for universal access.
A high tolerance for repetitive tasks and attention to detail is necessary. We are looking for someone who is patient, conscientious, detail oriented and who has the ability to work both alone, and in a team environment. Basic IT and technical skills are preferred. Applicants must be able to lift and move stacks of books (2-6 kilograms each) short distances, sit at a scribe station for the duration of the shift, and use a foot pedal to raise and lower a metal book cradle.
The successful candidate will gain experience in the following fields: building an open source digital library, digital photography, and digital scanning software, preservation, presentation and production of digital books, digitising special collection books, understanding copyrights and public domain materials.
The main focus of this position is to aid in the digitisation of material for a medical library, which can vary significantly in age and durability. The digitisation of this material requires a strong attention to detail and an incredible amount of care when handling. The items can be hundreds of years old. A knowledge of conservation of book and paper materials is a plus but not a necessity.
The position is for 12 months.
