Job Summary
Job Description
Company Overview
Cracking Slate is a theatre company dedicated to nurturing confidence, creativity and collaboration in young people. We put adventure, play and creativity at the heart of everything we do. We want to empower young people to become the directors of their own story, supporting them to dive into their imagination and work together to express themselves and their own ideas.
Company Culture and Values:
At Cracking Slate, we are guided by our core principles, known as our Guiding Lights:
Creating an Enriching Environment: We strive to provide a fulfilling and enriching experience for both participants and practitioners.
Encouraging Play and Experimentation: We promote play and experimentation within all aspects of our work.
Respecting Individual Journeys: We respect everyone's unique journey and experiences that have brought them to where they are today.
Open and Honest Communication: We communicate openly and honestly about the challenges we face.
Active Listening and Engagement: We listen to each other and engage with each other's ideas.
About the Project
Voyagers is a new interplanetary adventure for children aged 6-11 and their families about dreams and aspirations. The questions we want to ask with the show are: What is our future on planet Earth going to be like? How can you be the change you want to see in the world? Is the grass really always greener on the other side? The show will be set in space and we are keen to explore new ways of portraying space in a studio theatre space.
The project builds on our commitment to creating high-quality theatre for Key Stage 2 audiences, an age group often underserved by the sector. Voyagers will be a participatory show where the audience will be involved in the storytelling process, e.g. choosing which planet to visit.
The initial R&D will run for 4 days: Monday 20th April - Thursday 23rd April (9am-5pm). Further development work is pencilled for the autumn. Fee: £560 (4 days @ £140p.d.)

Job Responsibilities
We're looking for a director who is excited by making work with young audiences, not just for them.

You'll lead the room, guide the development of the story and its interactive elements and be involved in the facilitation of the in school workshops taking place at the end of the process.
We're particularly interested in directors who:
Enjoy devising processes and working collaboratively
Are curious about participation and audience agency
Have a strong instinct for working with Key Stage 2 audiences
Can create a rehearsal room that feels open, playful and focused.
