Job Summary

Black South West Network is seeking a Digital Archivist to lead digitising, cataloguing and preserving community archives for The UnMuseum, using a community‑led, decolonial approach to ensure ethical, accessible care of Black stories and belonging in the South West.

Job Description

Black South West Network (BSWN) is recruiting a Digital Archivist to lead the digitisation, accessioning, and long term care of community archive materials for The UnMuseum - Collecting, Preserving and Sharing Stories of Black Identity and Belonging in the South West project, working within a community led, decolonial framework.

As Digital Archivist, you will lead key aspects of the delivery of The UnMuseum digital archive, working collaboratively with community members, technical specialists, and the project team. You
will play a central role in ensuring that community collected materials are digitised, described, preserved, and made accessible in ethical and culturally sensitive ways.

Working closely with the Community Curator, Senior Curator, and wider team, you will:

- Lead the digitisation, accessioning, and organisation of community collected materials
- Design and facilitate co production workshops and prototype testing with community participants and technical partners
- Support the development and delivery of an interactive, accessible digital archive platform
- Ensure data security, metadata quality, and long term digital preservation
- Embed ethical, decolonial, and anti racist archiving practices across all areas of the project

You will also contribute to participatory events across the South West, supporting communities to digitise and preserve cultural heritage currently at risk, and assist with the delivery of a regional festival celebrating Black identity and belonging.

Closing date: 30th April at 12pm.

Job Requirements

You will bring experience in digital archiving or preservation, alongside an understanding of project delivery and a strong commitment to heritage justice, care, and community ownership.

You should be able to work confidently with digital systems and metadata, and to collaborate with clarity, sensitivity, and respect across a wide range of partners, communities, and stakeholders.
We are particularly interested in applicants who are excited by community led and co produced approaches to heritage work, and who value ethical, decolonial, and anti racist practice in how
archives are created, cared for, and shared.

We strongly encourage applications from people from Black and racially minoritised backgrounds, and from those with lived experience relevant to the communities and histories this project centres.
