Job Summary

The AFD for Programming is a senior leadership role responsible for the artistic, editorial and curatorial integrity of Mansfield Town Film Festival. This role formally embeds responsibility for systems, submissions & selection into a clearly accountable leadership position as the organisation grows

Job Description

This is initially an unpaid/voluntary role for 6 months, but our aim is to provide a small salary/honorarium for each AFD role in 2026 if funds allow. Longer term we aim for AFD roles to be salaried part time roles.
Core Areas of Responsibility:
1. FilmFreeway Systems and Submission Management - Lead and oversee all submission systems and workflows. This protects the integrity and transparency of the festival.
2. Screening Team Leadership and Coverage - Own the structure, coordination and accountability of the screening team. This role ensures every film is given fair and equitable consideration.
3. Judging, Scoring and Selection Processes - Oversee and protect the integrity of the selection process. This role is about what is selected and why.
4. Programming Structure and Strand Development - Shape the artistic structure of the festival. The role ensures the programme feels intentional, not assembled.
5. Awards and Jury Coordination - Lead the artistic process behind Mansfield Film Awards (MFAs). This role protects the credibility of MTFF's awards.
6. Reporting and Representation Data - Produce analysis and insight around submissions and selections. This ensures programming decisions are evidence-led and accountable.

The Assistant Festival Director, Programming also:
- Is expected to watch and rate a significant proportion of submissions (on a voluntary, unpaid basis)
- Produces a post-festival Programming Report for the Festival Director and Board
- Supports future programming for satellite activity such as Reel Futures where appropriate
- Declares and manages conflicts of interest.

As MTFF moves beyond its initial three-year cycle, its focus now turns to establishing long-term financial stability, sustainability, and growth. The role will be initially voluntary, but our aim is to provide a small salary/honorarium for each AFD role in 2026, if funds are sufficient.

Job Requirements

We are seeking a highly organised and creatively ambitious film festival professional with prior experience in programming, submissions management, screening coordination or curation. Applicants should demonstrate a strong understanding of FilmFreeway workflows, judging systems, strand building and fair selection processes, ideally within a short film or independent festival environment.

Experience managing screeners, coordinating jury processes, analysing submissions data and balancing artistic integrity with accessibility is essential. You should have excellent editorial judgement, strong written communication, confidence working with spreadsheets and reporting tools, and a passion for championing working-class and underrepresented voices.

Experience of building coherent themed programmes, awards shortlists and audience-friendly strand structures is highly desirable.

Job Responsibilities

The Assistant Festival Director for Programming is responsible for the artistic and editorial integrity of MTFF.
This role owns:
- FilmFreeway systems and submission workflows
- Screening team management and coverage targets
- Judging, scoring and selection processes
- Awards shortlisting and jury coordination
- Programming structure, strands and curation
- Reporting on diversity, representation and submissions
The Programming role ensures that every film is judged fairly, that MTFF's values are embedded in selection, and that the programme is artistically strong, inclusive and coherent.
This role is about what is shown and why.
