Job Summary

Matt's Gallery is looking for a Project Archivist, having secured support through The National Archives' Archives Revealed Cataloguing Grants scheme to catalogue a portion of its archive.

Job Description

The Matt's Gallery's Archive is a living record of radical, artist-led practice from the1960s to today. It holds films, books, invitations, letters and ephemera that give significant insight into the working methodology of the Gallery and the artists it has worked with over the last 46 years, as well as the network of galleries and art spaces it has been a central part of. This project will focus on the Photographic and Audio-Visual Materials Series.

The key aims of the project are:

1. Create an overarching catalogue hierarchy with Fonds and Series level descriptions for the whole collection working to ISAD(G) standards and migrating existing records saved in Excel spreadsheets where they exist.

2. Give detailed attention to the fragile and high-demand photographic and audio-visual materials (44 boxes of analogue format photographic imagery and 4 boxes of assorted video tapes), which will be catalogued to file level.

3. Within key files, work with us to select items to be catalogued to item level and prioritised for digitisation, capturing associated metadata.

4. Make the catalogue publicly accessible through our website and national portals such as Discovery and the Archive Hub.

5. Work with us to improve preservation and access through repackaging and lay the groundwork for digitisation.

The successful candidate will work closely with Founding Director Robin Klassnik, who is the key expert on our collection. Together, they will identify materials, capture essential as well as contextual information, and illuminate the relationships between people, artworks, and events that have shaped the gallery's history.

Archives Revealed is a partnership programme between The National Archives, the Pilgrim Trust, the Wolfson Foundation and The National Lottery Heritage Fund which helps unlock collections across the UK and build the skills needed to care for them into the future.
