Lead operations, finance and fundraising for the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre, ensuring its effectiveness, financial stability and long-term sustainability. A hands-on role at a pivotal moment, supporting the launch of a new museum and embedding systems, income and operations for growth.

Job Description

The Anti-Apartheid Legacy Trust (AALT) is seeking an Operations and Development Manager to play a central role in the lead-up to the opening of the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre (AALC) in 2026 - Europe's first museum and engagement platform dedicated to Britain's role in the global anti-apartheid movement.

This is a pivotal, hands-on leadership role at an exciting moment of transition, as the organisation moves into a newly restored historic site at 28 Penton Street and prepares to launch a new public-facing venue.

Working closely with the Director, the postholder will lead on operations, finance, and fundraising, ensuring the organisation's effectiveness, financial stability, and long-term sustainability. They will oversee day-to-day operations, support the development of systems and processes, and play a key role in embedding a resilient and ambitious operating model for the AALC.

The role combines strategic oversight with active delivery. Key responsibilities include managing financial planning and reporting, supporting fundraising across trusts, foundations, and other income streams, developing operational systems, and overseeing early-stage venue management, including hires and facilities.

You will also contribute to organisational governance, HR processes, and stakeholder relationships, working with funders, partners, and trustees. As the Centre opens, the role will evolve to include line management of operational and venue staff.

This is an opportunity to join a small, collaborative team delivering an ambitious and meaningful project, connecting the legacy of anti-apartheid to contemporary conversations around social justice, solidarity, and civic participation.

Contract Period: Fixed term to December 2026 (with intention to make permanent, subject to funding). This role is part-funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Days: 3 days a week equivalent (flexible hours)

Salary: £34,000 per annum equiv.

Job Requirements

Lead operations, finance and fundraising to support the successful launch of the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre. Oversee day-to-day operations, including facilities, venue use and hires, ensuring high standards and smooth delivery. Manage financial planning, budgeting, cashflow and reporting, and support business planning and performance monitoring.

Work with the Director to develop and deliver fundraising activity across trusts, foundations and other income streams, and support donor and partner relationships. Lead on implementing operational systems, policies and processes, including HR, governance and compliance.

Support procurement, contracts and supplier relationships, and contribute to organisational reporting and evaluation. Represent the organisation as required and build strong relationships with funders, partners and stakeholders.

As the Centre opens, take on line management of operational and venue staff.

Job Responsibilities

We are looking for someone with experience across operations, finance and fundraising, ideally within a charity, heritage or cultural organisation. You will have strong financial management skills, including budgeting, cashflow and reporting, and experience supporting or delivering fundraising activity.

You will be confident working across organisational operations, including systems, processes, HR and governance, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with Boards, funders or external partners is desirable.

You will be organised, proactive and collaborative, with strong communication and problem-solving skills. A hands-on approach and the ability to balance strategic oversight with delivery is essential.

A commitment to anti-racism, social justice and the values of the anti-apartheid movement is important.
