Job Summary
Job Description
The Anti-Apartheid Legacy Trust (AALT) is seeking an experienced Interpretation Producer to support the delivery of interpretation for the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre (AALC), opening in 2026. The AALC will be Europe's first museum and engagement platform dedicated to Britain's role in the global anti-apartheid movement.
This is a delivery-focused consultancy role at a critical stage of the project. Working closely with the Director and project team, you will structure, refine and realise interpretation across the building, ensuring it is coherent, accessible, and aligned with the Centre's narrative, audiences, and design approach.
A strong foundation is already in place, including an Interpretation Plan (RIBA Stage 3), mapped visitor journey, and a significant body of draft content developed in-house. You will review and refine this work in response to project priorities, budget, and build developments, and develop a clear, deliverable interpretation scheme.
The role combines content structuring, editorial judgement, design coordination and production management. You will work across narrative development, layout and format decisions, visual identity alignment, and the coordination of production for interpretive materials including panels, graphics and displays.
You will also support accessibility and audience engagement, ensuring interpretation is inclusive and effective for a wide range of visitors.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping a major new cultural project, translating complex histories into a compelling and meaningful visitor experience.
Fee: £8,500 - £11,000 (depending on experience and agreed scope)
Time commitment: Flexible/part-time, to be agreed
This role is part-funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and with thanks to National Lottery players.
Job Requirements
Significant experience in interpretation production within museums, heritage or exhibition contexts. Proven ability to structure complex content into clear, engaging narratives and shape interpretation for public audiences.
Strong editorial judgement and experience working with pre-developed content. Experience working across design, content and production teams, with the ability to coordinate delivery and manage timelines effectively.
Confident working within design processes, with knowledge of layout, print and fabrication workflows, and familiarity with design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent).
Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a small team and respond to evolving project needs.
Experience of capital or exhibition projects, co-curation, or working with archives is desirable, alongside an understanding of inclusive and accessible interpretation.
Job Responsibilities
Map and structure interpretation across the AALC, ensuring a clear and coherent visitor journey. Work with the project team to consolidate and shape existing content into accessible and engaging narratives aligned with project objectives and audiences.
Support the refinement of interpretation text where required and advise on effective interpretive formats, including panels, object labels, audio and spatial approaches. Ensure consistency of voice and narrative across all outputs.
Work closely with the visual identity and wayfinding designer to align content with the spatial and graphic design approach. Coordinate the design and production of interpretive materials, liaising with designers, fabricators and contractors.
Develop and manage a production schedule to ensure delivery within project timelines. Support accessible and inclusive interpretation for diverse audiences.
Contribute to installation and final delivery of interpretive materials.
