Job Summary
Job Description
LSA is introducing these new Head of Year roles to strengthen teaching leadership at year-group level.
These are qualified teachers in genuine middle leadership positions, with the time, authority and responsibility to lead their tutors, own the PSHCE and tutor curriculum, and drive standards, achievement and culture across the year. The Head of Year is the visible teaching leader of the cohort, the person students and staff associate with the year group's identity, expectations and success.
We are looking to appoint two Heads of Year, with initial year group allocation confirmed on appointment. Heads of Year will then follow their cohort through, so the person appointed to Year 12
would move with that group into Year 13 in the second year of their appointment. The Pastoral and Professional Development (PPD) Lead leads pastoral support for the students within the year group.
These roles work in close and deliberate partnership, but with distinct primary accountabilities. The Head of Year is not a pastoral manager, they are a teaching middle leader who ensures that every
student in the year is known, supported and challenged.
The Head of Year reports to the Assistant Principal for Inclusion. The role works in close daily
partnership with the Pastoral Manager, the PPD Lead for the relevant year, Heads of Department and
the Attendance Manager. The Head of Year oversees the tutor team within their year group.
Job Requirements
The successful candidate will:
Be a qualified teacher with credible classroom practice and the confidence to lead and hold others to account
Have a genuine commitment to high expectations for every student - academically, professionally and
personally
Be a strong communicator who can lead a team, run an assembly, and hold a difficult conversation with equal
skill
Have experience and evidence of running successful interventions
Be data-literate and able to use attendance and progress information to identify concerns and drive action
Work collaboratively and with clear purpose alongside the PPD Lead, Pastoral Manager and Heads of
Department
Be visible, energetic and deeply invested in the year group they lead
Be ready to hit the ground running and build relationships quickly with students, staff and families
Job Responsibilities
SUCCESS IN THE ROLE WILL LOOK LIKE
The tutor team is well led, consistent and confident in their role
Students in the year group are known, supported and held to high expectations
The PSHCE and tutor programme is purposeful, well delivered and regularly reviewed
Year-group culture is strong, with clear standards and a positive sense of identity
Underachievement and disengagement are identified early and responded to effectively
The Head of Year is recognised by students and staff as a visible, authoritative and trusted leader for the
year group
The partnership with the PPD Lead and Pastoral Manager is clear, well-coordinated and free from unnecessary
overlap
