We are at a defining moment in our history. Welsh National Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru was born in the post-war spirit of democracy, fuelled by a national passion for human connection through song. In its 80th anniversary year, we are committed to reimagining the company as a contemporary opera company, fit for the 21st century, rooted in Wales but international in its ambition. We want to reimagine what opera can be today, positioning WNO as a pioneering, brave and joyful force in the UK's live arts ecology. We want to champion increased diversity on our stages and in our audiences and prove that opera is the dynamic art form of our time.

Boasting a diverse range of artistic activities, from grand opera to chamber work, WNO Orchestra is an exciting ensemble of artistic excellence. In recent years, WNO has given critically acclaimed new productions of Britten's Peter Grimes (2025) and Death in Venice (2024). WNO Orchestra enjoys a busy concert programme, including an international reputation with invitations to the Jan ek Festival in Brno (2022) and opening the Prague Spring Festival (2023.)

The Company is also in the process of recruiting a new Music Director, following a decade under the Artistic Leadership of Tom Hanus. Previous Music Directors have included Carlo Rizzi and Lothar Koenigs.

In this next chapter, we are seeking an exceptional Leader of the Orchestra to Lead the Orchestra for opera of all scales, concert and staged performances and rehearsals of Welsh National Opera Orchestra. To provide Artistic leadership to the Company and represent the Orchestra and Principals' group. To participate in WNO's Participation and Engagement programmes. Serving as a member of Artistic Administration, providing leadership and expertise when it comes to artistic vision, programming, orchestral fixing. Musically prepare for all sessions of WNO orchestra activity.
