Job Description
Hampstead Theatre is seeking an experienced and collaborative Head of Stage to lead stage operations across our Main Stage and Studio productions.
Reporting to the Technical Director, you will oversee the planning and delivery of all stage activity, managing permanent and freelance staff, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of stage and flying systems.
You will play a key role throughout the production process-from rehearsals and fit-ups to performances and get-outs-working closely with Production Managers, designers and visiting companies to deliver high-quality productions.
This role requires a hands-on leader with strong technical expertise in scenic construction, rigging and stage systems, alongside excellent people management skills. You will be responsible for maintaining stage equipment, supporting Health & Safety compliance, managing budgets, and developing your team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled Head of Stage or experienced Deputy ready to step up, to contribute to bold, original theatre in one of London's leading producing venues.
Job Requirements
An experienced manager of people and a great communicator
Organised, with strong attention to detail
A creative thinker and problem solver
Excellent knowledge of theatre production practice
Strong knowledge of stage systems (lifts, counterweight flying, rigging)
Good knowledge of scenic construction and installation
Good understanding of Health & Safety
Understanding of staff management and HR practices
Strong written and verbal communication
Leadership and people management skills
Good technical and scenic skills
Ability to read technical drawings (incl. CAD)
Good IT and numeracy skills
Significant experience in rigging and flying systems
Extensive experience managing teams, training and development
Experience planning and leading get-ins/get-outs
Experience with stage systems, maintenance and problem-solving
Collaborative experience with designers and production teams
Experience of risk assessments and safe working
Job Responsibilities
Leading the Hampstead Theatre Stage team and freelancers in planning and delivering productions and events
Recruiting staff and ensuring appropriate skills and experience are in place
Assisting the Technical Director and Production Managers with planning, staffing and delivery
Supporting team development and progression
Overseeing get-ins and get-outs of stage and flying equipment
Managing departmental and show budgets within agreed limits
Supporting daily show operations and wider stage activity
Ensuring stage and flying systems are maintained, safe and compliant
Supporting delivery of Health & Safety requirements in planning and on stage
Maintaining safe and legal working practices in line with regulations
