Job Summary
Job Description
We are seeking two individuals to bring key skills to the Board and are keen to hear from candidates with relevant experience.
The first one, here, is in communications - marketing, digital engagement and PR to strengthen the charity's public profile, broaden its reach, and increase awareness and impact.
The second, see our other advertised position, is in museum curation, heritage interpretation, and visitor experience to help guide the charity's work in conserving, presenting, and sharing the RYH with the public.
Trustees are normally appointed for an initial term of three years. As it can take time to settle into the role and make a meaningful contribution, we ask that applicants feel able to commit to at least this period. Trustees may be reappointed for up to three terms, for a maximum of nine years of service.
How much time will I need to devote to being a Trustee at RYH?
In a typical year, Trustees are expected to:
- Attend approximately four Board meetings per year (around two hours each)
- Read papers and prepare in advance of meetings
- Take part in additional meetings or discussions, online or in person
- Attend events, e.g. fundraising, when possible
We anticipate the time commitment to total around 3-4 days a month.
Job Requirements
Desirable experience in several of these fields:
Strategic communications: Experience developing and delivering communications strategies that support organisational objectives, enhance reputation, and increase public engagement.
Marketing and audience development: Experience in creating marketing approaches to attract visitors, supporters, volunteers, donors, and partners, with an understanding of audience needs and motivations.
Digital marketing: Practical experience using digital platforms, websites, social media, email campaigns, and online content to increase reach, participation, and engagement.
Content and storytelling: Experience in developing content that communicates the importance of conservation work, craft skills, and the charity's impact.
Education experience to help us develop a narrative around special educational needs and develop relevant networks
Public relations: Knowledge of media relations, press engagement, storytelling online and in traditional media.
Job Responsibilities
While others may ultimately manage day-to-day operations, the RYH trustees will play a strong operational role in these early years and be quite 'hands-on'. A strategic contribution will also be needed, with the ability to advise at board level on reputation, public engagement, communications risks and opportunities, and long-term growth.
The role will involve brand development and profile-raising, so experience in strengthening organisational identity, improving public visibility, and ensuring consistent and effective messaging across communication channels will be welcome.
The role will be outward-facing to an extent, involving stakeholder and community engagement, and experience in building relationships with local communities, schools, heritage organisations, funders, supporters, and other key audiences will be relevant.
