Job Description

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) is an artist-led charity promotes engagement with the visual arts through a range of exhibitions, events and workshops. The RBSA was established 200 years ago and has a dedicated Membership of artists.

The RBSA has its own gallery in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, a short walk from the city centre. We are looking for a part-time Front of House & Sales Assistant to join the RBSA Gallery and the existing dedicated team.

Standard hours will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10.00am to 5.15pm. As the person who welcomes visitors to the gallery, the role is very important as an ambassador of the RBSA. It will include dealing with enquiries, selling a wide range of craft and original artwork, plus completing a range of administrative tasks. As a key player in a small team, you will enjoy working in a customer-facing role, demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work on your own initiative.

You will have substantial experience of customer service or retail sales, plus have a desire to make a key contribution to the organisation. We deliver a full and diverse program of exhibitions and workshop programs in the gallery, which means that it is an energised and diverse space.

Job Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has:
- Sales experience
- Good attention to detail
- A commitment to the efficient completion of administrative tasks
- Proficient computer skills
- A positive disposition

The successful candidate will:

- Be reliable and energetic
- Can demonstrate an ability to work on their own initiative
- Be naturally enthusiastic
- Can liaise with visitors and artists confidently, in person and over the telephone.

Qualifications
Educated to at least A-Level (or equivalent) and with a proven interest in the visual arts.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate high levels of numeracy and literacy, as well as a friendly and confident approach to Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel. Experience in Square payment platform and WordPress platforms would be advantageous.

Job Responsibilities

- Introducing the RBSA and gallery visitor services
- Selling exhibition artwork
- Handling sales of craft shop items
- Handling cash and daily sales reporting using Excel
- Dealing with enquiries received by email, telephone, post and in person
- Answering the telephone and directing calls
- Gallery administration
- Opening/locking up the premises
- Contributing to the work of the gallery team in a variety of disciplines, this could include processing exhibition entries, marketing, and updating information.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive as the team is required to contribute to the work of the gallery team in a variety of disciplines.

WORKING HOURS
Tuesday & Wednesday 10.00am - 5.15pm
The successful candidate will be required to work at some RBSA evening events including Preview Evenings (5.00 to 8.30pm), cover annual leave for colleagues (which may be on any day of the week), & to work any additional hours in line with the Gallery's needs.
Renumeration: £12.71 per hr
