Job Description

We're The Cluny - one of Newcastle's best-loved independent music venues, sitting in the heart of Ouseburn. We've been part of the city's cultural fabric for years: from grass roots gigs to headline shows, late nights and loud speakers.

We recently landed £334,000 through the ACE Arts Everywhere Fund, and we're putting it to serious use. This is a real opportunity to make the Cluny more accessible, more energy-efficient, and more sustainable - without losing any of what makes it the Cluny.

This role will be part time approximately 1.5-2 days per week over the course of the contract but flexible to the needs of the project. At no point will the role exceed 3 days per week.

Job Requirements

The project has three core aims: improve environmental sustainability, strengthen long-term viability, and make the venue genuinely more accessible for everyone who walks through our doors.

We're an operational venue - gigs don't stop while we build - so phasing and minimal disruption to our programme are non-negotiable.

The scope of works includes (but isn't limited to):

External landscaping adaptations
Internal mechanical cooling for Cluny 1
Full lighting, sensor and switching replacement across both Cluny 1 and Cluny 2 to cut energy use
Accessible WCs, ramps and door adaptations across both spaces
New heating via air source heat pump and/or infrared to Cluny 2
Electrical upgrades to deliver 3-phase power to Cluny 1

Job Responsibilities

We're looking for a consultant to take this from concept to completion. That means covering RIBA Stages 0-7 in full: project management, architectural design, surveys, tender documentation, contract administration, statutory approvals, planning liaison and building regulations compliance.

The lead consultant should bring:

Chartered Building Surveyor qualification (MRICS or equivalent)
Hands-on experience with complex refurbishment - ideally listed buildings and/or arts/culture venues
A track record managing multi-disciplinary teams
Experience on grant-funded capital projects
You'll need to be comfortable working around a live programme and genuinely care about getting the accessibility and sustainability outcomes right - not just ticking boxes.
