Nottingham Youth Orchestra, an independent music charity organisation, is seeking Volunteer Trustees to help shape its future. For 40 years NYO has inspired and helped young musicians across Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands, to develop musical excellence, confidence, friendships and life skills

Job Description

NYO is seeking new Trustees to join the Board and contribute their experience, ideas and enthusiasm in supporting the continued growth and sustainability of NYO's symphony and jazz orchestras. Whether you are a parent, former member, arts professional, community leader or simply someone passionate about giving young people access to high-quality music opportunities, NYO would love to hear from you.

You do not need previous trustee experience to apply. NYO welcomes first-time trustees alongside experienced board members and will provide support and induction to help you succeed. The charity organisation is particularly interested in people with experience or interest in:

Job Requirements

We are particularly seeking Trustees with skills, knowledge or interest in one or more of the following areas:
FINANCE - Supporting budgeting, financial oversight, sustainability and planning
HUMAN RESOURCES
Supporting people management , policies and volunteer culture
RECRUITMENT & RETENTION - Helping strengthen recruitment and retention within orchestra membership
COMMUNITY LINKS & PARTNERSHIPS
Building relationships with schools, arts organisations, sponsors & communities
ARTISTIC / CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT - Supporting artistic vision, audience engagement and programme development

Job Responsibilities

The Board of Trustees provides leadership, oversight and strategic direction for NYO. Trustees are collectively responsible for:
Setting NYO's strategic direction
Ensuring financial sustainability
Supporting good governance and charity compliance
Overseeing safeguarding and risk management
Supporting organisational development
Championing NYO in the community
Trustees work collaboratively with staff, tutors, volunteers and stakeholders to ensure NYO remains sustainable, inclusive and artistically ambitious.
Location | Hybrid (meetings requiring online attendance)
Term of Appointment | 3 years, renewable
Remuneration | This is a voluntary, unpaid position.
Reasonable agreed expenses may be reimbursed
Time Commitment | Approximately 6 Board meetings per year; Preparation and occasional email communication; Attendance at concerts and events is welcomed and encouraged. There are currently no formal subcommittees, although opportunities to lead specific projects may develop.
