Job Summary

LU Arts is seeking an enthusiastic, friendly and committed Pottery Tutor to lead its highly popular adult evening classes. These run in three 8-week blocks during the University spring term, summer holidays and autumn term on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Job Description

The successful candidate will plan and deliver engaging, practical pottery classes that provide an enjoyable and rewarding learning experience. We are looking for a tutor who can design a well-paced programme that introduces participants to a range of ceramic techniques while supporting them to develop their own creative ideas and complete individual projects over the duration of each course. The successful candidate will be confident teaching mixed-ability groups and adapting sessions to meet the needs and interests of participants.

Tutors are encouraged to shape the programme around their own skills, experience and creative practice, and to create an inclusive, inspiring and supportive studio environment that encourages participants to return and continue developing their skills.

The University Ceramics Studio is equipped with pottery wheels, an electric kiln and dedicated tutor storage space. Due to the specification of the kiln, earthenware clay is used for all evening classes. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe day-to-day management of the studio during teaching sessions, including loading, firing and unloading the kiln, and organising the storage of participants' work between classes.

Core equipment and materials are provided for the teacher and course attendees and stored close to the teaching room.

This role is hourly paid at Grade 7 (currently £34.41, inclusive of holiday pay). In addition to teaching time, 30 minutes per class is paid for set-up and take-down, with additional paid hours agreed in advance to cover kiln loading, firing, unloading and associated preparation work. Please note that travel expenses cannot be covered.

The expected hours are 5 hours per week when a course is running. This would usually be October, November, late January to early March and mid June to early August.

You will be eligible to join the USS pension scheme.

Deadline for applications is midday on Wednesday 19 August 2026.
