Job Summary

Paid creative development opportunity for photographer to create new work inspired by the entertainment culture of social clubs from the 1950s to the 1990s in Rotherham.

Job Description

Rotherham Museums, Arts & Heritage, in collaboration with FLUX Rotherham, are looking for a photographer wanting to develop their practice by creatively responding to the key themes of the NLHF 'Palladiums of the North' project;
- The period from the 1950s to the 1990s - a time of significant social and economic change across Rotherham
- The lived experience and atmosphere of going out, shared social rituals and local performance culture
- The everyday social spaces where people gathered, celebrated and formed community connections
- The flourishing of working-class leisure culture during these decades, with clubs and social venues playing a central role in community life
- The live music, comedy, dancing, bingo, family events and celebrations hosted at these key sites of social interaction, identity and belonging
- The interiors of remaining venues, many of which hold important physical assets such as running orders and performer rules

The residency will take place from September 2026 to March 2027, with an exhibition in the Test Space gallery at Clifton Park Museum opening with a provisional date of December 2026.

This Test Space exhibition will visibly launch the Palladiums of the North project and inspire a flagship exhibition in 2028.

There is a fee of £6000 towards artist and development time for an estimated 17 days, inclusive of travel and expenses, and a payment of up to £1000 for resources which may include equipment, materials, print of works and relevant interpretation, training or go-see visit costs.
